Early history records that the Berber tribe built little towns in Tunisia and would trade with travelers along the coastline. Tunisia with coastlines on the Mediterranean Sea encouraged traders such as the Phoenicians who settled down by the coast during the 10th century BC. Carthage was founded in 814 BCE and became home to the Phoenicians. The Punic Wars was a series of three wars fought between 264 and 146 BC. The Romans finally took over the province for over 500 years and Carthage was reduced to a client state of Rome.

The Arabs invaded Tunisia in the 6th century BC and brought the religion of Islam to the country. 99% of today's Tunisians are Muslims. Many Muslim dynasties ruled such as the Zirdis dynasty that followed the rules of the Fatimides. The Fatimides sent tribes known as Banu Hilal who ravaged Tunisia. The Hafsids lost their reign to Spain who took over control of many cities on the coast until they were occupied by the Ottoman Empire. In 1881 Tunisia became officially a French protectorate. Tunisia became an independent country in 1956.

Tunisia is located in Northern Africa with the Mediterranean Sea in the north and east borders. The beautiful coastline extends to 1300 km on the Mediterranean Sea. Tunisia is also bordered by Libya to the south-east and Algeria to the west. The sprawling Sahara covers 40% of the country while the rest is a fertile area.

eVisa introduction plans were announced in July 2017 for Tunisia visas. Visa on arrival is also available for citizens of GCC member states.

Types of Visa and Validity
At the moment, there are no electronic visas and travelers have to visit the embassy or consulate to obtain a visa. The processing time is about 5 days to 20 business days to obtain a Tunisia visa. The visa payment varies from country to country and the consulate or embassy in your country of residence will be able to help you.

A tourist visa is issued for a maximum of 90 days but you could extend your stay if you apply and obtain a Tunisia long-stay visa for six months overall.

Tunisia short-stay visa is issued for a stay up to 90 days and is issued for tourism, business or social visits. Tunisia's return visa is for permanent residents to stay out of the country for longer than six months. Tunisia exit visa is required if you want to exit the country on a temporary resident visa. Tunisia transit visa is required if you are on your way to a third country en route from Tunisia. You are exempt if you are a citizen of a visa-free country, you change planes without leaving the international airport or you don't disembark from your ship on an onward journey.

Air
Tunisair Express is the domestic airline operating direct flights from Tunis and Djerba, Sfax, Gafsa, Tozeur, and Tabarka. It must be noted that the domestic air network in the country is fairly limited.

Taxi
Taxis are fitted with meters and are cheap. However, evening tips have a surcharge of 50% for each piece of luggage. Taxis are plentiful and a good way to commute even during peak hours. You could book them by phone or through your hotel reception. Taxi Mami, E- Taxi, Tunisie Taxi are some of the operators.

Trains
Train travel is the best mode of transport with the Tunisian Railways connecting the cities effectively. There are several routes between Tunis, Sousse, El Jem, Sfax, and Gabes. Trains are comfortable, air-conditioned and convenient. Train timings, fares, and tickets are easily available.

Trams
Trams are available on six main routes indicated on maps in Arabic or French inside the trams. You could also look for signages at stations and tickets are sold at kiosks with a basic fare of 0.45 DT. Tickets are bought before travel with lines 3, 4, 5 travel south, and 1, 2 lines travel north of the country.

Bus
SNT and TCV are the two main bus companies. TCV buses are privately owned and are green and white-colored. They are a little more expensive on ticket costs than the SNT services. Please note that bus destinations and maps are only written in Arabic.

Via Air
Tunisia has Tunis-Carthage International Airport, the main airport in the country that services flights from Asia, Australia, America, the Middle East, Europe, and more. Emirates, Qatar, Lufthansa, SWISS airlines are some of the major operators in the country.

Via Sea
Ferry services are available and Tunisia can be accessed by sea. You could take a ferry from several seaports around the Mediterranean in Italy and France. Several services operate throughout the year with July and August being the most expensive months. Do book the trip well in advance.

Via Rail
