Wi-Fi accessibility is easy to secure in Jordan. It is a standard and mostly available for use for free in hotels, bars, malls, cafes and eateries. If you choose to use internet cafes, the average cost per hour is about $2.82. Coverage can be spotty in remote areas due to the mountainous terrain, but even the most rural areas will have some connectivity to offer.

Data plans from operators such as Zain are affordable options; 4 GB of data costs about $17 per month. There are plenty of other alternatives to remain connected on-the-go such as rental pocket Wi-Fi devices with 4G speeds which are affordable and convenient.

The local currency of Jordan is called Jordanian Dinar. The most easily convertible currencies to bring here are Euros, Pounds Sterling, and US Dollars. You can get Jordanian dinars conveniently at the local banks, or exchange facilities (various bureau de changes). Jordan was home to stone age hunters back in time as early as 8000 BC. As time advanced, people in Jordan moved to fortified homes by the Bronze age. Trade between Egypt and Iraq was flourishing, and Jordan provided integral trade routes to facilitate this exchange. After 1500 BC, Jordan was divided into various kingdoms out of which Moab, Edom, and Amon proved most important. By 500 BC, the Nabateans group of Arabs migrated to Jordan and developed a rich kingdom that was buzzing with trading activities. Petra was established as the capital, and by 106 AED, this region was taken over by the Roman Empire.

Jordan continued to flourish but ended up as a part of the Byzantine empire after the split of the Roman Empire. By the 7th century, Muslims conquered Jordan and the spread of Islam began to grow at a fast pace. In 1516, it became part of the Turkish empire. As the First World War started in 1914, Jordan sided with the Germans. This was a time when Arab nationalism was picking up momentum under the British influence. The Great Arab Revolt began in June 1916 signifying rebellion, and in 1918 Turkey was defeated by the allies. Jordan, however, was not granted independence.

In 1921, Jordan earned the status as a British mandate, and Abdullah I Bin Al-Hussein was made emir. Finally, Jordan's independence was secured in 1946 and Abdullah I Bin Al-Hussein became king.

Jordan covers an area of 89,342 square km and is mostly a landlocked country with Aqaba as its only port city. The coastline is the second smallest in the world running for only 26 km.

The country is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the east and south, Palestine on the west, Iraq to its east, and Syria to its north. Mostly an arid terrain with desert and oasis, the highlight is used for agriculture purposes and has evergreen forests.

The highest point of Jordan is the mountain of Jabal Umm al Dami that is 1,854 meters tall, whereas the lowest point is the Dead Sea with a recorded depth of -420 m.

Due to the Bedouin and Palestinian roots of the locals, the communities here are a wonderful mix of ethnic backgrounds. Bound together by their Middle Eastern culture, the colloquial language in Jordan called "Amiya" is a dialect that is also spoken in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine.

Jordan is a Muslim majority country with 5% of the population practicing Christianity. There is religious freedom for all and both the Muslims and Christians take great pride in upholding their family values. Jordanians are warm, polite, and friendly people. Etiquettes play a key role in Jordan; men cannot shake hands with a woman unless she extends hers first. Feet cannot be put on desks or tables, and shoes are removed before entering homes and mosques.

Dressing
The traditional attire is worn to preserve the local culture. Men wear a one-piece full-body covering dress known as a "Dishdashah" or "Thoub". There is also a scarf used to cover the head which is called "Thagiyah". Meanwhile, the women wear a handmade full-body covering modest black dress with intricate red embroidered patterns.

Food & Drink
Bedouin farmers keep herds of goats and sheep to produce cheese and yogurt. Therefore the "halloumi" cheese is very famous here, and a common ingredient used in salads and sandwiches. The main cuisine consists of rice cooked with spices. Traditionally, a large tray filled with this delicious mix with a side of meat is served for lunch. The locals gather around on the floor on a mat, and small bowls of yogurt and salad are passed around. Families and friends break pieces of fluffy "Khubuz" bread and scoop bites directly from the tray.

Turkish and Arabic style tea is a significant part of day-to-day life. Often served with a side of sweets such as Baklava on special occasions, tea drinking is a cultural pillar.

Must-Try Delicacies
The national dish of Jordan is Mansaf. This delicious meal consists of lamb or mutton cooked in yogurt served with a side of rice on flatbread. Mansaf is a standard dish served during special holidays and celebrations such as weddings and birthdays. Via Bus
The most preferred means of transportation is the bus. The 15 to 18-seater minibusses rarely have a fixed schedule and depart when all the seats are full. The road conditions are good overall and the distances short. The buses have their departure and arrival points painted in Arabic above the brake lights or the back of the vehicle.

The fares are cheap; thirty-minute rides between towns cost approximately $1.4. Tourist sights are more expensive with fares of around $7 to $10.

Via Taxis
Shared taxis called services (pronounced ser-VEES) are a common sight. The white car can seat 4 to 7 passengers. With slightly higher fares than the bus, these taxis are more comfortable. Though they also depart only when full, the wait time isn't as long as the buses due to the limited car capacities. Remember to not sit next to someone of the opposite gender (in line with Jordanian cultural norms).

Via Rent A Car
Renting a car is a good choice for the ease of exploring Jordan's top places. Do remember to get an International Driving Permit. Traffic lights are followed, road conditions are good, and speed limits enforced. The limits are usually about 100 to 110 km/h on open stretches of highway and the police are strict about monitoring drivers through speed radars. Most road signs are in English and Arabic, though dark country roads can make driving at night a less pleasant experience. The cost of renting a four-wheel-drive (essential for deserts) normally starts at about $70 a day.

Via Plane
Royal Jordanian is the sole operator of the two domestic flights in Jordan. The route is between Amman and Aqaba, and the flight time is about 30 minutes. The views of the Dead Sea and Petra mountains are gorgeous, and the flight fare is an affordable $70 one-way on average.

Via Air Route
Queen Alia International Airport is the main airport of Jordan that serves as a hub for national airlines including Royal Jordanian. Though there are no direct flights from Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, travelers can catch connecting flights from Thailand or other nearby countries.

Via Rail Route
The old Hejaz Railway line has been suspended and there are currently no scheduled passenger trains.

Via Road Route
There are 3 crossings to enter Jordan via the border in Israel, and the cost to exit is about $40. The Yitzhak Rabin Terminal/Wadi Araba Crossing is a comparatively convenient option that is not close to Aqaba, but the short waiting time makes it a more preferred choice. It takes about 1 hour to cross, and visas are available for eligible travelers from the terminal.

When traveling from Egypt, visitors will need to travel via Israel between Taba and Aqaba. From Taba, take a taxi ride to Eilat to Israel, and simply cross into Jordan using the Yitzhak Rabin Terminal/Wadi Araba Crossing.

Via Water Route
Crossing the Gulf of Aqaba via a ferry is possible to reach Jordan; the two options are Meenagate ferry or AB Maritime. These depart from Nuweiba in Egypt costing about $85 one-way. There are faster and slower routes available based on your preference.

TRAVEL TIPS

The taxi fares on the meters are mentioned in fils, not dinars, so be careful to not overpay the driver.

Solo travelers should always remain cautious about their surroundings.

Carry a business card or write down the address of your hotel so the taxi driver knows exactly where to drop you off.

Learn a bit of basic conversational Arabic (hello is mer-ha-ba, and thank you is shuk-ran).

Keep a copy of your passport safely in your hotel room.

SAFETY TIPS

Carry your wallet in your front pocket or keep your purse in the front so they remain in sight.

Do not carry more cash than needed.

The nightclubs are prime spots for pickpockets and muggers. Avoid being intoxicated or being out later in the night.

Stay alert; take a taxi home instead of walking at night.

Tap water is not safe to drink. Always drink bottled water (check the seal to ensure it is intact).

Avoid any food in the market that may have been washed in tap water.
