Greece is considered the birthplace of civilization and polis was the social and political unit of ancient Greece. Polis translates as the city-state and ancient Greece has Athens and Sparta, two important city-states. Sparta was ruled by two kings and a group of elders. It was a highly regimented society that contributed very little artistically or culturally to society. Athens progressed from an aristocratic tribal state to tyranny in the 8th century BC. It transited into a democracy with Draco and Solon being two important lawgivers. The tyrant Pisistratus and the reformer Cleisthenes also had their influence. Athens depended a lot on the exploitation of slaves.

The Persian Empire took control of the Greek cities of Ionia and extended its rule to the north of Greece. Two Persian invasions were defeated in Marathon and the other by the united Greek forces in Plataea. Athens was brought to its glory by Pericles who started a democracy under a constitution. There always remained a rivalry between Sparta and Athens for the leadership of Greece that led to the Peloponnesian Wars. Athens was defeated, and a plague demolished the city. King Philip of Macedonia led the semi- Greek kingdom in the north. Alexander the Great, Philip's son conquered the Persian Empire in 334-327 BC. and his rule spread to the Greek colonies.

Greece began to worship the Olympian Gods and Greek drama developed at the festival of Athens. Herodotus wrote on the Persian Wars, Thucydides on the Peloponnesian Wars, and Polybius on the rise of the Roman Empire.
