Named after the Medieval-era Ghana Empire, Ghana is one of the oldest continuously inhabited regions in Africa with a history of more than 1000 years. The present-day country is believed to have been home to humans since the time before the Common Era. However, the earliest traces of development date back to the early middle ages when Ghana was on the verge of becoming one of the great kingdoms in the Sudan region of Africa.
