Free Wi-Fi availability is common in Egypt; however, the speed and reliability can be a concern especially if you're traveling for work. Despite the possibility of low bandwidth and patchy coverage, most cafes, fast food restaurants and hotels offer free access in Cairo. Wi-Fi is also easily available in the main tourist centers such as Luxor and Dahab.

If you'd like to stay connected on the go with more stable and higher speeds, mobile phone service providers such as Vodafone Egypt, Orange, and Etisalat provide cell phone SIMs with 4G/LTE speeds and USB Wi-Fi devices. Prices start at about $5 for 1.25 GB of data that has a validity of one month.

Converting your currency for the Egyptian Pound can be easily done at the banks or the conveniently located Foreign Exchange Bureaus (the signs may say: Bureau De Change, Geld Wechseln or Cambio). The Egyptian Tourism Authority advises travelers to not bring more than 5000 EGP (approximately $320) to Egypt in local currency. You can, however, bring up to $10,000 and have them converted locally. The most easily convertible currencies to bring here are Euros, Pounds Sterling, US Dollars, Canadian Dollars, and Australian Dollars.

Egyptian Pound notes can be found in denominations of one, five, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Piastre coins can be found in denominations of 1 EGP and 50, 25 and 10 piaster.

Always ask the clerk to give you smaller denominations of the Egyptian pound because the bigger currency notes can be hard to use during transactions. Most banks will cash traveler's checks, but the rate received in return is usually lower than that of cash. If you choose to withdraw cash from an ATM, the general limit in Egypt is EGP 2,000.

The banks of the Nile got its first residents over 8000 years ago. Home to hunters and fishermen, the locals were avid farmers and raised animals to sustain themselves. Slowly, the volume of people grew to form villages and towns, and by 3000 B.C a proper civilization surfaced.

By 3100 B.C, Upper and Lower Egypt came together under the rule of a powerful king or "pharaoh". Conquests were initiated and many historic landmarks were built ranging from the pyramids to other famous temples. Around 1000 B.C, Egypt had broken down into more parts and the kingdom's influence weakened.

Egypt was taken over by the Romans in 31 B.C. This was when the capital of Cairo was founded. Later, Egypt became a part of the Ottoman Turkish Empire in the 16th century. By the start of the 18th century, European influences also started gaining power; the British conquered Egypt in 1882 with their focus being the Suez Canal area.

The country gained independence from Britain in 1952 and regained control over the Suez Canal in 1956. In the 1970s, Egypt and other neighboring Arab countries were involved in a period of warfare with Israel. This came to an end with a peace agreement signed in 1979.

Egypt's struggles with control have continued in recent years as well with the toppling of their long-time president Hosni Mubarak's government in 2011.

The country of Egypt has the following main natural features: River Nile running through its middle, desert to the east and the west, the low-lying fertile Nile Valley and Delta (5% of the total land area), and the cataracts of Nile.

Egypt is divided into two main sections: Upper Egypt (south), and Lower Egypt (north), the names being given due to the fact that River Nile flows from the south to the north before emptying in the Mediterranean Sea. Egypt is generally a dry country and without the River Nile, it would have been a complete desert. Only 3.5% of the total land area is cultivated and has settlements.

Annual rainfall is recorded to be an average of 2.5 centimeters, though the River Nile does experience a significant increase in water levels due to rainfall in its source region of southern Ethiopia. The sediments caused after this period are great for agriculture and provide the necessary soil for trees and crops to grow. The terrain in southern Egypt consists of low mountains and deserts. Meanwhile, the north has wide valleys close to the Nile, and deserts in both the east and the west.

Egyptian Hospitality
Warmth and hospitality are a deep-rooted part of the Egyptian culture. Extremely helpful and friendly, even if you ask someone for advice or directions to get somewhere, they will go out of their way to ensure that you get the answers you're looking for. Always smiling and chatty, Egyptians will make you feel welcomed into their land with their enthusiasm and positivity.

Ethnicity
A whopping ninety percent of the Egyptian population comes from Eastern Hamitic background. The rest is a mix of Greek, Nubian, Armenian, Italian, and French ethnicities adding diversity to the cultural mix.

Language
Egypt predominantly is an Arabic speaking community due to its history of Muslim conquests in the 7th century. The written and spoken Arabic is different and there are regional dialects in Egypt that influence communication depending on the area you're visiting.

Radio and television broadcasts generally follow the Cairo-spoken language as their dialect used for messaging. The most common foreign languages spoken are English and French. Thus, Egyptian tourism thrives due to the ease of communication it offers to its guests.

Religion
Faith is important to Egyptians, and a staple part of their day-to-day lives. Ninety percent of the Egyptian population are Sunni Muslims, eight percent are Coptic Christians, and the rest are Jewish or of other Christian denominations. The Muslim and Christian minorities live in harmony together, and contrasting celebrations such as Eid and Christmas are honored with great tolerance. Despite following the western calendar, Islamic religious holidays are celebrated in accordance with the Islamic calendar.

Fasting during Ramadan is done by Muslims with dedication; the believers fast from sunrise till sunset and engage in charity work to help the needy. Iftar, or breaking of the fast, is done at home and in mosques with special meals to further emphasize the importance of the holy month.

Alcohol consumption is not the norm. If you do choose to consume liquor, always purchase it from a licensed restaurant, and under no circumstances should you drink alcohol openly in the streets. This is a punishable offense and can lead to imprisonment.

Mass Media
Egypt is very progressive with industries such as journalism, film, television, music, and the arts thriving with new content and messaging. Arabic, English, and French radio broadcasting is done, and Egypt holds the distinction of being the only Arab country with a movie industry that has been making movies since the 1930s.

Egypt Climate

Egypt experiences high temperatures between May and August; the summer season means strong sun exposure and an Egypt temperature that can exceed 30 degrees Celsius. The heat is dry. It's best to schedule sightseeing in the early morning or late afternoon, not the scorching midday heat. The best time to visit Egypt is during the months of October to April, the time of the northern hemisphere fall. Winter/ Early Spring (October- April)

Via Bus
Buses serve Cairo from 5.30 a.m. till 1 a.m.; they are extremely busy during rush hour and finding space can be a challenge. The bus number and destination are marked in the space above the driver. The conductor (Kumsari) collects the fare. Outside the capital, microbuses usually group outside bus and train stations.

There are also long-distance bus routes available that are serviced by several operators with different offices and bus stations in the northern Cairo suburbs. The three bus types are - stopping the bus at allocated stations, intercity with fewer stops, and express/deluxe service.

Via Metro
Affordable, efficient and convenient, Cairo is the only city in Egypt with a metro system in place. There are 3 separate lines; metro stations are easy to recognize with their distinct sign - a big red "M" in a blue star outside. Trains run every five minutes on average, and the hours of operation are between 7 a.m. till 11 .30 p.m

Via Railways
The Egyptian Railways has the schedules available online, in addition to accommodating ticket sales. The railcars have 3 classes: 1st (Darga Ula), 2nd (Darga Tanya), and 3rd (Darga Talta). There's a sleeper service that runs from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan, with day train options and non-sleeper night trains as well.

The Cairo to Alexandria route is "Spanish" (esbani) trains that reach in about two and a half hours. "French" (faransawi) trains have more stops in comparison. The agricultural region north of Cairo is served extensively by the railways.

Via Taxis
Traveling via taxis is an affordable and efficient way to get around Egypt. You can call a taxi by signaling using your hand on the road. They are metered with a government-assigned rate which applies to destinations outside the capital as well.

Finding metered taxis can be more difficult to find outside Cairo; be prepared to negotiate a favorable rate with the driver before starting the ride.

Via Rant A Car
The busy roads and bad traffic make Egypt a hazardous location to rent a car. Road rules are rarely followed, and inexperienced drivers can find themselves in the middle of a lot of confusion. Car rentals are only recommended for a drive out of Cairo.

Via Plane
One of the busiest airports in Africa, the Cairo International Airport is the hub for EgyptAir, EgyptAir Express and Nile Air alongside various other airlines. It is in Heliopolis to the northeast of Cairo, and 15 km away from Cairo's main business center. Other main airports can be found in Luxor, Aswan, Alexandria and Sharm el-Sheikh.

Via Air Route
The main airports in Egypt are located in Cairo and Luxor. Other options include Aswan, Alexandria and Sharm el-Sheikh (best to choose if you want a Red Sea holiday). Cairo Airport, the principal airport of Egypt, is served by many major airlines such as British Airway, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Gulf Air, Lufthansa, Oman Air, and is the primary hub for EgyptAir and Nile Air.

Via Road Route
Despite sharing land borders with Sudan, Libya, and the Gaza strip, traveling to Egypt via road is not a recommended option due to bureaucracy related inconveniences that may take place at the border control.

Via Rail Route
There are no direct international railway links to the neighboring entries that enable access to Egypt.

Via Water Route
There are daily ferry routes operating between Nuweiba and Taba, as well as Aqaba in Jordan. Some cruises also use Port Said or Alexandria as stops between their longer itineraries.

TRAVEL TIPS

Learn the basic Arabic words and phrases to make communication easier (for e.g. Hello is "salam", thank you is "shukran", and you're welcome is "Afwan".)

The standard tip at restaurants is about 10%.

Get a local sim card.

Always use metered taxis.

The weekend falls on Friday and Saturday making the Egyptian attractions very busy.

Most tourist spots will charge extra if you wish to use your camera and tripod.

Stay away from local political or religious gatherings.

Scammers are common around the pyramids and museums; do not give your money to someone without getting your services first.

If the vendors or shopkeepers become aggressive, do not engage in conversation.

Do not wear flashy jewelry or attract attention.

Never photograph military installations.

Keep copies of your identification with you.

Do not drink alcohol on the street or outside a licensed restaurant, or you could be arrested.

In case of emergency, go to the tourist police instead of the normal police.

Cooperate with all safety checks in hotels and road checkpoints.

Always drink bottled water (A one-liter bottle costs about $0.30); the water in Egypt is heavily chlorinated.
