The date of the foundation of Brussels remains uncertain by historians. However, the official period is usually situated in 979. During the period Duke Brabant ruled, between the eleventh and twelfth centuries, a fortress on the small hill of Coudenberg was built. That is the time Brussels began to attract more citizens into the town and started growing. It became an important commercial trade center with the city organizing Champagne Fairs that were trading fairs. The city was located en route from Bruges to Cologne that helped enhance trade and Brussels became a part of the Hanseatic League by the end of the seventeenth century.

The middle ages were dominated by wealthy families known as the upper class of Brussels. By 1306, seven different lineages were given certain commercial and political privileges. At the beginning of the fourteenth century, the common artisans, weavers, dyers, and tradespeople revolted against these upper-class families. In 1421, a municipal constitution was passed and powers were shared between the Lineages and the Guilds that were divided into nine nations.

In 1477, Brussels became the region's capital and the seat of the governors of Flanders. In 1609, the northern United Provinces became independent from the Spanish Empire and Brussels was the capital of the Habsburg Netherlands. The city went into an economic crisis due to the many wars and political instability and in 1713, the Treaty of Utrecht was signed by which Brussels became a part of Austria.

In 1789, the Belgians revolted against the Habsburg Emperor and in 1795, Napoleon and his troops captured the city. In 1815, when Napoleon was defeated in the battle of Waterloo, Brussels became a part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. In 1830, the country got its independence after a revolution and Belgian's first king Leopold I was crowned. The city was the chosen capital of Belgium. Brussels during the two world wars was occupied by the Germans which was a setback. However, it was home to the three World Fairs in 1897, 1910, and 1958. The Atomium and the Manneken Pis became the two symbols of Brussels.

Citizens from those countries that can visit the Schengen region without a visa are required to apply for ETIAS authorization before traveling.

Types of Visa and Validity
Schengen visa costs €80 and the validity for a short stay is up to 90 days within a six-month period. The processing time for the Schengen visa is two weeks.

Transit visa Brussels is required by citizens, not in the Schengen visa-exempt list, and can be obtained from the consulate or embassy section. The Transit visa is required when transiting international areas of the airport within the Schengen states. The fee for the Transit visa is €60.

Public Transportation
STIB organizes most public transport in the Brussels-Capital Region that includes metro, trams, and above ground bus connections. Timetables of the transport are shown at the stops or you could check the STIB website as well. Tickets can be purchased with contactless payment with every STIB bus, tram, and metro station equipped providing contactless payment devices. It's a good idea to buy a 1-day card that may be used on STIB transport vehicles as much as you like during the day. A 1-day JUMP card costs €7.50.

Bike Renting
You could rent a bike all year at the Cyclists House, Villi, Pro Velo, and Ride with Billy to name a few. Upload the apps from your smartphones and most shared electric bikes can be picked up and dropped off anywhere in Brussels. A great way to see the city as you commute and roam the attractions. Brussels is filled with bicycle boxes with key access and can park up to about 5 bikes. Organize a group and discover Brussels on a bike.

Taxis
A taxi ride is a safe and efficient mode of commute where the ride costs depend on waiting time per hour, the price per km, and day or night charge. The rate per km also depends on whether the journey is inside or outside the 19 districts of Brussels. You could also pay a small tip in addition to the meter charge that is always appreciated. Complaints if any can be registered online through the Brussels taxi website. You will also be given a printed receipt at the end of the journey unless the taxi was pre-booked.

Carpooling
Carpoolplaza in Belgium, Cambio, and DriveNow in Brussels offer carpooling services. DriveNow provides BMW and MINI that you can even rent and drive if you are a registered customer. You can find the location of the car using the app or look for more information on the website. Just for 33 cents per minute, you get the facility that includes fuel, parking, insurance, and taxes. Waterbus
Take the Waterbus that commutes on the canal between Brussels, Van Praet, and Vilvoorde. Do note that the services are available from May until October.
