Staying connected to the rest of the globe during a visit in Armenia is quite feasible. All you require is an unlocked cell phone compatible with Armenian sim card before you travel here. There is ample internet access in the city. However, the network range in remote areas can be restricted. There are three primary operators in Armenia, namely, Beeline, VivaCell MTS, and UCOM-Orange. You can avail 2G, 3G, and 4G services in Armenia via any of these operators. The prepaid sim card can be purchased from the Airports (pricey) and local shops that are almost everywhere (economic). The incoming calls are offered for Free with no hidden charges, while outgoing calls can be made both nationally and globally. There are plenty of Free Wi-Fi access spots in Yerevan which you can use.

The national currency of Armenia is the Dram (AMD). Dram in Armenian translates to 'Money'. It is cognate with the Arabic currency 'Dirham', which also means 'Money'.
In Armenia, you would be expected to make most of the payments in the country's currency. Hence, it is wise to figure out the Armenian Dram before travelling there. Certain places do accept USD bills as well. We would not advise you to take any chances though.

The civilization in Armenia can be traced back to more than 5000 years ago. The Archeologists continue to find evidence that the Armenian Highlands could be the earliest site where humans existed for the first time on earth. Originally, Armenia was known as Hayk, a name that symbolises the Sun-God 'Orion'. It was later named Armenak or Aram (the ancestor of all Armenians and the great-grandson of Hayk's great-grandson). Eventually, it was known as Armenia.

In 301 B.C., Arsacid Armenia became the first sovereign nation to officially adopt Christianity as a religion. Armenia is believed to be the biblical site of the Garden of Eden. The country lies in the historical mountains of Ararat upon which Noah's ark came to rest after the floods. In 1045, as the kingdom fell and Seljuk was conquered, the Armenians established a kingdom in Cilicia until 1375.

Post that, Greater Armenia was dispersed between the Ottoman Empire and Russia. The Armenian suffered a massive genocide at the hands of the Ottomans killing 1.5 million Armenians in it. Armenia regained independence in 1918, leading to the establishment of Democratic Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Armenia in 1991.

The Armenia geography comprises of the southern Transcaucasia region (southwest of Russia). The country is majorly covered by the Caucasus mountains. It is a landlocked country between the Black and the Caspian seas bordered by Georgia and Azerbaijan on the north and east respectively. It is bordered by Iran and Turkey on the south and west sides. The place has about 4.7% of land covered in water bodies with few (but dense) forests. Armenia rises to almost 4095 m above sea level at Mount Ararat's. Etchmiadzin Cathedral, Echmiadzin Etchmiadzin Cathedral is the most popular places to see in Armenia and the oldest Cathedral in the world. Originally built between 301 and 301, legend has it that the creator of the cathedral Nerses III built this church on the site of 'illumination'. For those who hold a valid European Union passport and those nationals that belong to the Schengen Agreement member states are permitted to enter Armenia without a visa. They can stay for up to 180 days in a year.

Since January 2015, the United States passport holders no longer require a passport to enter Armenia.

For a majority of the other countries, citizens can procure a Single-Entry Tourist Visa at the border control points. Here is a list of countries whose citizens can enter Armenia on a passport without Visa:

Nationals who have valid passports from India, Iraq, and China can enter Armenia through the Visa on Arrival facility.

There are certain countries, the citizens of which are not granted a Visa on Arrival facility. Instead, they need to apply for the Armenian Visa at their nearest consulate or embassy. Further, they require an invitation to apply for a Visa before being permitted to enter the country. The list of these countries is as follows.

Subway Network
When in Yerevan, you can use the Subway network as it is clean, convenient and cheap. A one-sided trip costs about 100 Drams. Buy a plastic token at the entry and use it to walk through the turnstiles.

Local Buses
There is a wide network of minivans (marshrutkas), minibuses, buses, and trolleybuses. They usually charge a standard fee of 100 Drams at the starting point. Just make sure to know about your route, passenger information in advance as you would find the information in these buses in Armenian only. Marshrutkas are more popular for regional travel.

Taxis/Cabs
If you are too tired to grab public transport, taxis are the next viable option. On average, a taxi fares around 600 Drams for every 5 km. Post this distance, they charge 100 Dram for every additional km driven. We recommend you to pre-book these via apps as you will have a better chance of getting good discounts. As long as the taxi has a meter, you are good to go. Avoid getting ripped off by negotiating and setting a price before hopping into a non-metered taxi.

Rent-A-Car
If you are a keen driver with excellent driving skills, then make your travel fun and intimate by renting a car. All you require is a valid Driver's License with International Permit. If you are not used to driving on the right side, then it is better to hire a driver as driving through the terrain of Armenia can be tricky in non-practised hands. Beware of the potholes! Rent a car that is well-equipped to manage rugged and sloped areas. You can book a rental at the Airport itself.

Hitchhike
Although not common, hitchhiking is still an accepted mode of transportation. Just hold one of your arms parallel to the ground and pat the air a little. You can flag taxis, marshrutkas, and even buses using this technique. The drivers do not expect anything in return. However, it is polite to offer anyway.

Via Bicycle
Test your physical limits while relishing the beauty of the Armenian countryside by enjoying a bike ride on the inclined terrains of Armenia.

Via Train
Enjoy leisure travel in Soviet-style Armenian trains. There is a slow, but well-connected rail route in Armenia. Trains in Armenia ply between Gyumri, Alaverdi, Georgia, and even Lake Sevan. You can plan your travel accordingly.

Via Plane
Being a small country, there are practically no domestic flights within Armenia.

Via AIR ROUTE
Air travel is certainly the fastest and most convenient way to travel from Armenia. You can book flights for Armenia at any of the two international airports in the country.

Zvartnots International Airport (12 km from Yerevan): Preferably for travellers flying from Dubai, Georgia, Moscow, Sharjah, Turkey, St Petersburg, Warsaw, Paris, Prague, Barcelona, etc. Popular airlines such as flydubai, Air Aeroloft, Air Arabia, Air France, Czech Airlines, and many more ply between Armenia and a majority of destinations.

Shirak International Airport (5 km from Gyumri): Being a smaller airport, SIA caters to travellers flying from Russia, primarily Moscow and Krasandor.

Via TAXI
Even though the borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan are closed, you can enter Armenia via Georgia or Iran (the nearby third countries). You may get in touch with local travel agencies and arrange for travel across the border.

Via BUS
You can go for Minibuses that ply between Armenia and Georgia. There are a couple of other bus services that ply between Yerevan and Iran.

Via RAIL
Armenian railways have served travellers to and from Turkey and Azerbaijan for a long period. The country has a well-connected international rail route to Tbilisi, Georgia. You can choose this option for a comfortable journey while observing beautiful scenery on the route.

Do not get into a taxi ride without discussing the fare in advance. This is to avoid the taxi driver from overcharging you.

Use shuttle bus for commuting locally as these are well-connected to different areas.

Make sure to have a valid international driver's license for driving locally.

Owing to military conflicts, the borders shared between Turkey and Azerbaijan are sealed. You can't get to Armenia via these countries and vice versa. You can access these countries via a third country (preferably Georgia and Iran) though.

Although the option of digital payment is readily available, it is recommended to carry Armenian cash for safety.

Save money by avoiding the purchase of bottled water. Feel free to consume tap water in Armenia as it is safe. You can find Free drinking water in special fountains called pulpulaks on most streets.

We recommend you rely on public transport more than the rental ones if you are planning to explore a major part of the country. The roads in the hilly and remote areas are not well constructed. It can become seriously stressful when driving on your own.

Consult your doctor for a basic health check-up before visiting the country. Armenian air can be low in oxygen due to the highlands. This can be particularly stressful to some people during acclimatization.

A majority of Armenians are proud. They do not like being offered money without any reason or charity. Hence, be careful when doling out any tips or charity money.

Bargain as much as possible when shopping in the local market.

Leave 5-10% tip at the restaurants.

Try not to wear bright or revealing clothes when scouring through the villages as that could invite a negative reaction from the locals.

Armenians love their country and its folks. Hence, DO NOT discuss topics on national issues, the Armenian genocide, or the country's relations with Turkey and Azerbaijan.

The country is yet to introduce Laundromats. Hence, we advise you to use the hotel's laundry services or dry cleaners for the same purpose.

1 Public Toilet Use = 100 Drams

You can carry in or out personal items worth up to 500 USD without incurring any custom charges. Carrying up to 2 L of alcoholic drinks is permissible.

You need to present proper bills, photographs, and papers for bringing artwork, handicraft items, jewellery, coins, etc. Whereas, you would require special permission for transporting wild plants and vegetation.

Avoid carrying medical supply of more than 90 days with no more than 9 prescription medication. Carry appropriate proof of the prescribed medication.

Hunting weapons require a special permit.

Transit of ammunition, weapons, illicit drugs, pornographic material, imitated money, is strictly forbidden.

SAFETY TIPS

Armenia is a safe country for women and tourists with a low crime rate.

Women travellers can tour here without fear. Armenian men do not pose any threat. They might want to talk to you or gawk at you. You can manage it better with a companion or by simply saying loud 'Goodbye'.

Avoid wandering on the outskirts of the city at night without a companion.

Commute via cab as much as possible post 10 pm.

Avoid being over-friendly with the cabbie when alone.

Stick to well-lit streets and main roads post-midnight.

Always keep your money safe in a sling bag with you.

HEALTH

Armenia is one of the most environmentally blessed countries on the globe. The country poses no risk to health. Hence, there is no obligatory vaccination needed for the travellers visiting here.

Cardiac patients are advised to consult their doctor before travelling here as the oxygen can be fairly low in the Armenian highlands.

You will be able to find reputed pharmacies at every nook and corner of the Armenian cities. It is advised to pack medical supplies before touring remote areas though.

The same applies to people with special health needs.

Most hospitals and medical facilities in Armenia do not accept credit card payments. Whether an emergency or not, please make provision for the payment to be made in AMD.

Carry ample sunscreen and hats during summer as the sun in Armenia is quite hearty.

On the other hand, the Armenian winters are bitterly cold. Hence, bring appropriate thermal clothing that can sustain large dips in the temperature.

Armenia is known for its hospitality and generous nature. There is no need to follow any dress code as they are very much accepting of the other country's culture and behaviour. As a tourist, you can pretty much wear anything you prefer. However, we recommend you stick to the basics (modest clothing) when travelling through the villages to avoid any adverse reactions.

Azerbaijan
