Almaty, Kazakhstan, has a very rich history dating back to 1854 when it was founded. It was initially called Verny and used as a Russian frontier fort. The Kazakhs were nomads during this time; many Cossacks and Siberian peasants settled around this area, but two major earthquakes of 1887 and 1991 later caused widespread damage. The early 19th and 20th centuries saw it turn into a location of exile, and eventually, it became the capital of Soviet Kazakhstan in 1927.

By 1930, the area of Almaty became accessible by the Turkestan-Siberia Railway. As more people were able to reach the city, its influence grew over time. Towards the end of the 20th century, the Soviet Union was broken up and Kazakhstan earned its status as an independent republic. Almaty was named the capital which lasted seven years before the shift to Nur-Sultan. Via Bus, Tram and Trolleybus
The most commonly used transportation mode in Almaty is the buses. There are 125 bus routes with links to destinations within the city and settlements outside as well. A ride is 80 KZT using the reliable Onay card which covers the cost of a single trip, or 150 KZT if you use cash. Most buses run from about 6 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Via Bicycles
The bicycle is a convenient way to get around Almaty. There are various Almaty Bikes that you'll see. To register, it is mandatory to have a Kazakhstani mobile number. The cost of the bike rental is Free for 30 minutes, 100 T for one hour, and 250 T for 2 hours.

Via Metro
The clean and air-conditioned metro is a great way to get from Raimbek station, near Almaty-II train station, to the southwest of the city center. With the metro running every 10 minutes, there are seven intermediate stations that you can use. The cost per ride is 80 T from 6.30 a.m. to 11.30 p.m.

Via Taxis
There are various taxi services you can use when public transport gets busy during peak periods. The Econom Taxi is the most affordable, whereas Almaty Taxi is more expensive in comparison. You can also Uber if you wish to.

Via Rent-A-Car
If you plan on exploring a lot, renting a car is more affordable than using taxi services and Uber. Most companies do not allow customers to take the car out of Almaty, so be sure to review the terms and conditions in detail before signing your agreement.

Via Plane
Almaty International Airport, (IATA: ALA), is located a quick 25-km drive from the city center. The airport is serviced by various famous airlines such as KLM, Air Astana, Lufthansa and Ukrainian International Airlines. It will cost you about $10 to $25 on average for a 30-minute ride from the airport to the city on most days.

Reaching Almaty by plane is very efficient. The Almaty International Airport, (IATA: ALA) is located 25 km from the city center. The airport is serviced by various popular airlines including Air Astana, KLM, Ukrainian International Airlines, Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa. Flights from Europe are about 7-8 hours in duration, and it's easy to find connections to Almaty from cities such as Moscow, Amsterdam, Bangkok, Istanbul, Beijing, Dubai, Delhi and more.

Via Rail Route
There are two railway stations to reach Almaty: Almaty-1 and Almaty-2. Almaty-2 is located strategically in the city center, and Almaty-1 is about 4-km away from the center. There are also direct train routes between Russia and Kazakhstan, with a train connecting Moscow and Almaty with stops at Saratov, Uralsk, Aktobe, Turkestan, and Shymkent in between.

Via Road Route
Almaty has well accessible bus routes as well. There are sleeper buses that depart from Urumqi in China and take 24 hours to reach Almaty. The ones from Yining alternatively take about 10 hours to reach. The crossing of borders can take up to 1 hour depending on the volume of travelers, so be patient because all people will pass through the same booths regardless of their country of citizenship.
