Day 1
Arrival in Kigali
Welcome to Africa! Upon arrival in Kigali, meet our representative. Transfer to Virunga Conservation Area which is about a 2.5 hours drive. Learn about the local communities, visit the markets and spend time in the villages (if time permits at extra cost). You also have an optional tour to visit the spectacular twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo (additional cost/payment direct). Enjoy a delicious dinner and an overnight stay at the Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge (Standard Cottage).
Day 2
Volcano National Park
After a tasty breakfast, transfer to the Volcano National office. The friendly and intelligent park guides brief you on the do's and don'ts in the forest, especially in the presence of mountain gorillas. Transfer for the most amazing gorilla trek, a star Rwanda attraction. Drive over mild bumpy roads to reach the trailhead. Take a 10 to 20-minute walk through fields of cultivated land to finally reach the edge of the lush green forest. Your gorilla trek begins here, as you enter the park in search of the mountain gorilla and probably golden monkeys. Wander around the spectacular forest retreat probably until midday to spot the elusive mountain gorilla.
It is a good thing to be prepared mentally and physically for a few hours of trekking but it is totally worth it. You get to see the great ape of Rwanda, in its own habitat up close. It’s a true state of high as you encounter them in the wild in the lush hills of Rwanda. This is once in a lifetime experience indeed. Please take along water and be prepared to get wet in the rain. Carry along waterproof clothing and of course a good camera. You will need a fast speed film or memory cards so as to capture the adventure on film. Ziplock bags to make sure the camera and films are protected from the rain are also recommended. After the amazing encounters in the wild, head back to the hotel. Eat a tasty lunch and transfer to Kigali for an overnight stay.
Additional Days
Should you wish to add an additional day with a second additional gorilla trek, the additional day will be as follows and start as Day 2:
Wake up to a lovely morning and look forward to another day with the mountain gorillas. Enjoy a wholesome breakfast and head out to a briefing session at the Volcano National office. The park guide helps you understand once again the dos and don'ts of a gorillas trekking expedition. Drive on mild bumpy roads, walk for 10 to 20 minutes to reach the edge of the forest. The trek continues as you are back in the natural habitat of the wild mountain gorilla. Wander along the path and chance upon the primates once again, probably by midday. Watch the way the mountain gorillas interact with one another. Don't forget to keep your camera ready. Catch the best pictures on film and we recommend that you carry fast speed film or memory cards as well. There could be scanty rain during the trek, so keep your waterproof clothes handy. Ziplock bags also are recommended to save your films from the rain. After the amazing trek head back for an enjoyable lunch and transfer to Kigali. Overnight stay in Kigali.
The last day of trekking will then be as per day 2 of the original itinerary with a trip to Kigali.
