Ghana flew more domestic passengers in 2025 than in any year the regulator has published, and one of the 2 carriers doing it publishes no timetable at all. What follows comes from Passion Air's own policy pages, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority and the Ghana Airports Company, all read in August 2026.
Passion Air is one of 2 airlines running scheduled domestic services in Ghana, and it is the one with the wider map. Most of what a passenger actually needs to know about it sits on its own policy pages rather than in any guide, and a fair amount of it contradicts itself. This is an attempt to set out what the airline states, where its own pages disagree, and which of those disagreements will cost you at the airport.
What follows covers the fleet, the Passion Air routes and the timetable that is not published, what the 4 fare bundles actually change, the baggage allowance and the 3 places the airline's own numbers disagree, the power bank policy that landed in June, every check-in deadline the airline states, and what the regulator's traffic figures say about the network. Where 2 official pages conflict, both are printed.
Start with the metal Passion Air flies, because on a short domestic hop it shapes more of the experience than the fare does.
| Type | In fleet | Seats | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dash 8-Q400 | 2 | 78 | The larger of the 2, described by the airline as a modern turboprop |
| Dash 8-300 | 3 | 50 | The smaller aircraft, and the more common one across the network |
Both are turboprops. There is no jet in the fleet and the airline does not claim one. Seat pitch is given as 31 inches, the cabin is single class, and the 4 named fare bundles are exactly that, bundles, not cabins. If a booking screen offers you something called Executive or First on this airline, that is the reservation system's stock vocabulary showing through rather than a product you can buy.
The detail with real consequences is how you get on board. The airline states it directly: its aircraft have passenger stairs, and the Dash 8 has no provision for attaching a jetty or using an ambulift. That single sentence decides the whole of its reduced-mobility policy, which is covered further down.
One caution on the fleet page itself. It lists 5 aircraft and then says 3 are used for commercial operations and 1 is dedicated to charters, which accounts for 4. It also names Bombardier as the manufacturer in one sentence and De Havilland in the next. Neither error matters to a passenger, but it tells you how carefully to read the rest.
The Passion Air routes map is small, entirely domestic and built on a single hub.
| Route | Code | Bookable days in a sample 61-day window |
|---|---|---|
| Accra to Kumasi | KMS | All 61 |
| Accra to Tamale | TML | All 61 |
| Accra to Takoradi | TKD | All 61 |
| Accra to Sunyani | NYI | All 61 |
| Accra to Wa | WZA | 53 of 61, with every Tuesday missing |
Read that last row carefully, because it is the only route with a gap and nothing on the airline's site tells you about it. Across a 2-month sample the booking engine offered no Wa departures on a Tuesday at all, while the other 4 routes were bookable every single day. Treat it as a strong signal rather than a published fact, and check your date before you plan around it.
Now the part that surprises people. There is no Passion Air flight schedule published anywhere. Not a departure time, not a frequency, not a days-of-operation line. The homepage has a Flight Schedule tab sitting in its own source code with the button commented out, so it renders for nobody. And the conditions of carriage refer passengers to a timetable twice, telling them check-in deadlines can be found in it, when no such timetable exists on the site.
The practical consequence is that the Passion Air booking engine is the timetable. There is no way to see the week at a glance, compare a morning against an evening, or find out whether a route runs on a Sunday, other than by searching dates one at a time.
Two more things the airline does not publish: a block time for any route, and any statement that a regional city connects to another regional city non-stop. Its reservation system will happily sell you Kumasi to Tamale, but its own configuration allows several segments in one itinerary, and nothing anywhere claims a non-stop that avoids Accra. Assume you are routing through the hub.
This is the single most useful thing in this article and Passion Air never states it in these words.
| Bundle | Change | Refund | Cabin | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Promotion | Allowed to 4 hours out, for a fee | Not refundable at all | 7 kg | 25 kg |
| Bronze | Allowed to 4 hours out, lower fee | Allowed to 4 hours out, for a fee | 7 kg | 25 kg |
| Silver | Allowed to 4 hours out, free | Allowed to 4 hours out, for a fee | 7 kg | 25 kg |
| Gold | Allowed to 4 hours out, free | Allowed to 4 hours out, free | 7 kg | 25 kg |
Look down the 2 baggage columns. They do not move. Paying up buys you flexibility and nothing else, so the only question worth asking yourself before booking is how likely you are to change the date. If the answer is not very, the extra buys you nothing you will use. That holds on every Passion Air booking, in every month of the year.
This matters because the airline's own baggage page opens by saying passengers get an allowance according to the fare bundle bought, and then prints one flat number for everyone. Its fees table settles it, showing 25 kilograms as a single merged value spanning all 4 columns. Any page telling you the Passion Air baggage allowance varies by fare type is repeating a sentence the airline's own tables contradict.
The headline allowances are clear enough. Below them sit 3 conflicts on the airline's own site, and 2 of them can stop a bag at the counter.
Now the conflicts. The baggage policy says no single bag over 32 kilograms will be accepted and tells you to repack. The FAQ on the same site says each checked piece must not weigh more than 25. Both cannot be true, and the gap between them is 7 kilograms of holiday shopping. Pack to 25 per bag and you are safe under either reading.
The cabin figures have a second version too, on a page last updated in 2023, which gives 55 by 35 by 23 centimetres and offers Gold passengers 10 kilograms rather than 7. The current fees table shows 7 kilograms merged across all 4 bundles. If you have bought Gold expecting 10, do not count on it.
And one published dimension is simply impossible. The checked-bag limit is printed as 250 by 79 by 112 centimetres with a maximum circumference of 300, which no object can satisfy. It is a corrupted figure rather than a rule, and there is no point trying to comply with it.
Excess on a Passion Air booking is charged by the kilo rather than by the bag, and the rate is banded into 3 route groups: Kumasi and Takoradi together, Tamale on its own, and Sunyani and Wa together at the highest band. You can pre-pay it through Manage My Booking rather than at the counter, which is worth doing if you already know you are over.
Bags also get refused on condition, not just weight. The airline names backpacks with loose straps, anything with hanging straps, torn bags, broken zips and cracked hard cases, and reserves the right to require film wrapping before it accepts them. Fragile and valuable items, which the airline lists as including musical instruments, electronics, art and documents, are carried only under limited liability and only if you sign a form saying so.
This is the most current thing on the Passion Air site and it is stricter than most travellers expect. The policy was issued on 5 June 2026 and updated 3 days later, aligned to the international dangerous goods edition in force and to the industry power bank changes of 27 March 2026.
| Rule | What the airline requires |
|---|---|
| Capacity ceiling | Anything above 100 watt hours will not be carried |
| Where it travels | On your person or in carry-on only, never in the hold |
| Charging it in flight | Prohibited |
| Using it in flight | Prohibited, including to charge your own phone |
| How many | A maximum of 2 per person, passengers and crew alike |
| Condition at the gate | No leaking or swelling, terminals taped or individually bagged, and the watt-hour rating must still be readable |
That last line is the one that catches people. The check turns on that rating, so a power bank whose printing has worn off the casing can be refused even if it is well under the limit, because staff have no way to verify it. Passion Air also names specific banned models by part number, which is unusual and worth checking against yours if it is a wireless or magnetic type.
Two more prohibitions on the same page are easy to trip over. Self-balancing boards, air wheels and mini scooters are banned entirely, in the cabin and the hold and on your person. And lighters of every kind, including electric and novelty ones, are banned outright in all 3 places. Most airlines allow 1 lighter on the person. Passion Air does not.
Liquids follow the familiar rule at 100 millilitres a container. Nail clippers are on the restricted list, which surprises people, and the airline warns that undeclared restricted items are taken at screening by the authorities and may not come back to you.
Every Passion Air deadline is stated, and the spread between them is wider than most people assume.
| Milestone | Before departure |
|---|---|
| Online check-in opens | 24 hours |
| Online check-in closes | 3 hours |
| Airport counter and bag drop close | 40 minutes |
| Be at the gate by | 40 minutes |
| Gate closes and you are offloaded | 25 minutes |
Two of those are worth memorising. Online check-in closing at 3 hours means it is useless for a same-morning decision, and the airline requires you to print the pass yourself before you leave for the airport. And the counter closing at 40 minutes is not 45, which is the figure printed on at least one page describing this airline. A 5-minute error at a domestic counter is the difference between flying and rebooking.
The counter opening time is nowhere on the Passion Air site. Any page telling you counters open exactly 2 hours before departure has taken that from somewhere other than the airline. What the airline does say, in its own force majeure clause, is that passengers should arrive at least 90 minutes before a domestic flight, and its special assistance page says 2 hours for anyone needing help. Neither is a counter opening time.
You cannot undo an online check-in yourself. Once you have checked in, offloading has to go through the call centre or an office, and the person travelling has to be the person who checks in, because security questions are answered at that point.
Ghana's airport operator does not state what identification a domestic passenger needs, so Passion Air is the only source on it. The airline does, and the list is broad.
For travel it accepts a passport, a national ID card, a non-resident ID card, a driver's licence or a National Health Insurance card, and states plainly that a passenger without identification will be refused travel. Note what is missing: a voter's ID is not on that list.
Now the trap. For collecting a cash refund the accepted list is different, and narrower in one direction and wider in another. It is the Ghana Card, a driver's licence, a passport or a voter's ID. So a voter's ID will get your money back but will not get you on the aircraft, and a health insurance card will get you on the aircraft but not your money back. If you carry only one of those two, carry it knowing which door it opens.
The age thresholds are set out and 1 of them is unusual.
The unaccompanied minor process is tightly written. A parent or guardian takes the child to the airport and has to stay until the aircraft leaves. The form is completed at or before check-in, the child carries a document pouch collected at the counter, and a named adult must be waiting at the other end. The airline will not release the child unless the name on the form matches the photo identification of whoever comes to collect. Its responsibility runs from hand-over to hand-over and no further.
Reduced mobility is where the turboprop fleet decides policy. Only the category of assistance that involves walking to and climbing the aircraft steps unaided is offered. The 2 more supported categories are not available, because the aircraft has no jetty and no ambulift. A passenger who cannot fasten their own seatbelt, reach an exit, fit a life jacket or self-medicate needs a travelling companion. Assistance has to be requested at booking or at least 48 hours before departure, and a standard wheelchair travels free in the hold on top of your allowance.
Every Passion Air fare bundle has the same deadline and it is unusually early: 4 hours before departure. Past it, changes and refunds both close and a no-show charge applies whatever you paid.
Three rules around refunds are worth knowing before you need them.
Where you bought matters more than most people expect. A Passion Air booking made direct and one made through an agency refund down completely different paths. The voluntary refund policy covers direct bookings only, meaning the airline's own offices, website, app and call centre. A booking made through an agency has to be refunded through that agency, and the money goes to the agency's account rather than yours. Mobile money refunds go strictly to the wallet that paid, whoever the ticket was for, and the airline says explicitly that it takes no part in any dispute that follows. If a relative paid for your ticket from their wallet, the refund is going to them.
Cash refunds are paid at sales offices only and never at airport offices, which is a wasted trip if you turn up at the airport expecting one. Processing is stated at 10 working days, and a card refund can take a further 21 working days to appear on the statement after the airline has processed it.
On the involuntary side, if the airline cancels or fails to run roughly to schedule it must re-route you or refund you. Ghana also has published passenger rights that apply on top of the airline's own conditions, covering care at 1 hour and at 2 hours of delay and compensation on some cancellations. Those sit in the civil aviation economic directives rather than in any airline policy, and they apply to every departure from a Ghanaian airport.
The regulator keeps its traffic statistics properly, and they put the Passion Air routes in context better than any marketing page.
| Airport | 2025 domestic passengers | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Kumasi | 486,859 | 53.9% |
| Tamale | 217,899 | 24.1% |
| Takoradi | 133,069 | 14.7% |
| Sunyani | 36,163 | 4.0% |
| Wa | 24,970 | 2.8% |
Ghana carried 903,227 domestic passengers in 2025 across 20,208 aircraft movements, which works out at about 2,475 passengers a day. That is the highest figure in the published series running back to 2010, up roughly 4.7% on 2024. December was the busiest month at 82,565 and February the quietest at 69,356, a spread of under 20%, which tells you domestic demand here is steadier than the holiday season suggests.
Two pieces of infrastructure explain why the network looks the way it does now. Kumasi's new terminal opened on 1 July 2024, built for 800,000 passengers a year and able to process 200 an hour through 9 check-in desks and 4 gates. And from 1 June 2025 the operating hours at both Kumasi and Tamale were extended, Kumasi closing at 11 at night rather than 8 and Tamale at 10 rather than 6, with the regulator explicitly advising domestic airlines to add frequency. Neither change has produced a published Passion Air flight schedule. Sunyani, meanwhile, was shut from March 2016 and only came back on 3 August 2022.
One caution on the official numbers. Two figures in the regulator's own tables are typographical errors: the 2025 domestic total appears once with a stray extra digit, and Wa's aircraft movement total does not match the sum of its own quarters. The passenger counts above are consistent across 3 separate documents and are the ones to use.
Everything above reduces to a short list of decisions that are actually yours on a Passion Air booking. Most of them apply just as well to flights from Accra to Kumasi, which is over half the domestic market on its own.
| Lever | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Buy the cheapest bundle unless you expect to change | Every one of the Passion Air routes carries the same allowance; you are only ever paying for flexibility |
| Keep every bag under 25 kilograms | The airline publishes 25 and 32 as the per-bag ceiling in 2 places; 25 is safe under both |
| Check in online the day before, not the morning of | It closes 3 hours out and you have to print the pass yourself |
| Work to 40 minutes for the counter, not 45 | The counter and the bag drop close together, and the gate closes at 25 |
| Carry a passport, national ID or licence | A voter's ID is not on the airline's accepted list for travel |
| Count your power banks before you leave | 2 per person, nothing over 100 watt hours, and the rating has to be readable |
| Leave the lighter at home | Banned on your person, in the cabin and in the hold |
| Pre-pay excess through Manage My Booking | It is charged by the kilo once the Passion Air baggage allowance runs out, and Sunyani and Wa sit in the highest band |
| Decide about changes before the 4-hour mark | After it, every bundle becomes a no-show |
| Book direct if a refund is at all likely | Agency bookings refund to the agency, and mobile money refunds go to the paying wallet |
Strip Passion Air back and it is a simple proposition. Five routes, all through one hub, on 5 turboprops, with one baggage allowance and 4 ways to pay for flexibility you may not need. There is very little to decide.
What there is a lot of is small print that disagrees with itself. The per-bag ceiling is published twice at 2 different weights. The cabin dimensions have 2 versions. The Gold bundle is offered 10 kilograms on one page and 7 on another. The infant floor is 14 days in the policy and 0 in the booking widget. And the timetable the conditions of carriage point you to has never existed: there has never been a Passion Air flight schedule to point at.
None of that is unusual for a small carrier, and none of it is a reason not to fly. It just means the airline's own pages are the only source worth trusting, and where 2 of them disagree, the more cautious reading is the one that gets you on the aircraft. Pack to the lower weight. Arrive for the earlier deadline. Assume the stricter rule.
And if you remember one number from all of this, make it 40 minutes. That is when the counter shuts, and nothing after it can be argued.
